VLC 3.0 Vetinari Release Brings Video LAN Back to VLC

The VideoLAN Organization announces the release of VLAN version 3.0.0 (aka: Vetinari) a major release of the always excellent video player.  This release brings forward a number of important features that reflect the increased and changing ways the we use video but also shows how ahead of its time VLC has been for streaming video over the year.

Some highlights include:

  • Streaming to Chromecast devices, even in formats not supported natively
  • Hardware decoding by default, to get 4K and 8K playback!
  • 360 video and 3D audio, up to Ambisoncics 3rd order
  • Audio passthrough for HD audio codecs
  • Browsing of local network drives and NAS
